Rob W - Bassist/Graphics
RW was in many respects the epitome of the duffer bassist. Despite this his distinctive booming bass sound, the aural equivalent of ‘a right good kick in the ‘ed' dominates all the recordings of the Beguiled irrespective of it's dubious qualities. This can be put down to one thing: he never changed his strings even once throughout the whole of the band's career, thus giving them their trademark flat, atonal pitch. A proponent of the single string bass progression, his unabashed commitment to the most basic basslines imaginable found a resonance with DK's uniquely one-dimensional tom-tom drum beats. The resulting emphasis on an unrelenting bass 'n' drums soundtrack offered a welcome platform for AB's overreaching fretwork on lead guitar while binding Simon's tortured vocals to Peter's inventive sythesiser effects. RW's innovative bass line ‘sampling' of 80's nihilist disco band Danse Macabre on The Beguiled's 'Darker Side of You' predated by many years the contemporary fashion for ‘subtly' incorporating the work of other artists and passing the results off as original. Dismissing the growing vogue for bass chords as being in some sense 'too public school for (him)' RW's true strength and greatest contribution to the music of The Beguiled's was his deliberate and complete disregard for musical sophistication.
